GAPING GILL YORKSHIRE DALES

GAPING GILL YORKSHIRE DALES:

You may have heard the name, but surprisingly few people have been to this huge chasm amid the limestone splendour of the Yorkshire Dales, the result of centuries of gentle lapping by the waters of nearby Fell Beck.

Inside this 300,000 million-year-old rock lies a huge chamber, home to a 350 ft-high subterranean waterfall and a sprawling 42-mile cave system. Book in for a ‘winch-meet’ where, twice a year, experienced cavers lower a metal cage laden with visitors into the abyss... or enjoy the views on a walk from nearby Clapham to the cave entrance (GPS: 54.149666, -2.382589).
